Florian Bruchez landed on the cover of our Annual, so we thought it was only right for him to kick off this new series, dedicated to the sounds that skiers love. The music that we listen to reveals a lot about who we are. Sometimes it motivates us, bringing us up, or down. Sometimes it makes us feel invincible, or dance like crazy, or kiss. This is the magic of music. So we hope you enjoy Florian’s playlist, and get an insight into the mind of one of our favorite Swiss skiers.
Hi Flo. You’re the first target for this new project. Let’s get into it! Do you listen to music while you’re riding?Yes, but not all of the time. When I ride at the end of the season in snowparks or when I do backcountry, I usually always listen to some music. It helps motivate me and feel like I’m in my own little world. However, when I go ski touring or freeriding, I never listen to any music. Not hearing the external noise stresses me a lot. There are many, many things that you have to pay attention to when you’re off piste, You have to stay concentrated. It’s also important to enjoy the silence sometimes.
Very true… Could you share your current playlist with us?
There you are.
Thanks! Does it improve your riding?
In freestyle, yes of course. Without any music I feel naked. It helps me to stay concentrated, and at the same time, let myself go.
What sensations does your music give you?
It frees my mind, I feel somewhere else. Just before sending a trick, I would usually prefer to hear hip-hop music. When I do freestyle, I need to listen to a song which moves me and motivates me. Something with a damn good beat. Also I need to hear songs I know, I rarely ride while discovering new songs.
What is the last song that you listened to?
There are many, many songs that I love. I could list a huge number of them. I think I’ve listened to Mos Def – Auditorium a billion times. But the last song that I listend to is Desmond Dekker – Israelites. Funny, isn’t it? I also really appreciate reggae music. I used to listen to a lot of this kind of music when I started freestyle skiing, probably because of the old videos of Candide, Tanner, etc.
Ah yeah, reggae was king back in the day… So is there a group that you listened to when you were a child that you still listen to today?
Snoop and Dr Dre since I was a kid. I remember the first time that I discovered it. I remember watching MTV when they released “Still Dre”. I went crazy. I thought it amazing. I just loved the beat.
What was your favorite concert?
It has absolutely nothing to do with what I just told you so far, but I saw The Hives in concert two times. That was sick man, I loved it. As you can see, I really listen to everything, it depends of the mood. What I especially appreciated was the atmosphere the singer could give us during those two concerts. He was jumping into the crowd, running absolutely everywhere. He was a crazy dude. I’m pretty sure that my friend who got a shoe on his head when he jumped in remembers it as well as me, haha.
What’s your favorite song from a video part?
Level 1, After Dark. The one with Chris Logan and Alex Bellemare with Auditorium – Mos Def. The atmosphere that they created, the beautiful images and the sick backcountry tricks, combined with the music that I love, makes this part really strong for me.
You’re stranded on a deserted island with only one album, what would it be?
Drake – if you’re reading this its too late.
Why this album?
Because this album is one of the few I could hear without skipping any songs. It is also one of the first ones that came to my mind, but there are also so many that I’m probably forgetting. It is so random from week to week. It also depends on the people I’m with. I won’t put on any hard hip hop when I’m with friends who hate it, or rock for the people who love hip hop.
What a nice guy. And for the people who don’t like rock or hip hop, we’ve got a nice deserted island for you to visit… haha. Anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks for the interview!
Thanks to you Flo. See ya in the snow!
